Many people, regardless of age, feel nervous about visiting the dentist — and that’s especially true when it comes to oral surgery. As someone who has worked with patients for over 15 years, I’ve learned that the fear is often not about the pain itself, but about the unknown. I remember a patient who needed a wisdom tooth extraction but avoided it for years due to fear. When she finally came in, we spent the first part of the appointment simply talking — no tools, no procedures, just conversation. By explaining each step and using calming techniques, we were able to perform the surgery smoothly, and she was surprised by how painless the experience was. Dental anxiety is a real barrier to good oral health in Japan and worldwide. That’s why I integrate both modern pain management and a patient-first communication style into my work. Sometimes, just knowing what will happen next can transform the entire experience. Whether in my Shinjuku clinic or during an online consultation, I encourage patients to express their concerns openly. My role is not only to treat teeth and jaws but also to care for the person behind the smile.
