From my perspective – a Cosmetic Dentist & Prosthodontist , graduated from the University of Melbourne – Faculty of Dentistry (Australia) – what worries me most after the pandemic is the state of oral health and prevention awareness of adults. The clinic is receiving more and more cases of advanced tooth decay, prolonged gingivitis, tooth wear due to grinding, misaligned bites… which could have been prevented with regular check-ups and proper hygiene.
Provocative numbers and real stories
From internal data and recent public reports, a few noteworthy points can be drawn (for reference only):
[li indent=0 align=left]About one-third of adults admit to missing at least one routine dental visit in the past 12 months.[li indent=0 align=left]Persistent tooth sensitivity occurs in many people aged 25–45, often related to receding gums or enamel wear due to improper brushing.[li indent=0 align=left]The demand for cosmetic procedures (bleaching, porcelain veneers, and clear aligner orthodontics) has increased sharply , but at the same time, the number of complications due to self-treatment following online instructions has also increased.I remember a 29-year-old female patient who came in with bleeding gums when brushing and bad breath. She had been reluctant to go to the dentist for two years. The results: full-blown gingivitis, deep pockets in the molars ; just one scaling and root planing session and hygiene instructions improved 70% after 4 weeks. Another case, a 38-year-old male who spontaneously bleached his teeth multiple times, causing demineralization of enamel and widespread sensitivity; had to remineralize before discussing aesthetics. Cases like this remind me that prevention is much cheaper and easier than correction.
Why do we neglect prevention?
[li indent=0 align=left]Awareness that “no pain means no disease” : Periodontal disease progresses silently, and when pain occurs, it is often too late.[li indent=0 align=left]Lack of time and reliable information : Busy schedules, information on the internet is "noisy".[li indent=0 align=left]Fast aesthetic pressure : Prioritizing the "white - even - fast" solution while ignoring the gum and bite foundation. Why should you go to a professional orthodontic - dental facility?
[li indent=0 align=left]Comprehensive diagnosis before beautification[li indent=0 align=left] All cosmetic interventions must be based on periodontal health . At a professional facility, you will receive:[ul data=1][li indent=1 align=left]Periodontal examination (measurement of gingival pockets, bleeding, plaque), assessment of brushing habits.[li indent=1 align=left]X-ray/CBCT when needed , detect cavities, bone loss, and impacted teeth.[li indent=0 align=left]3D intraoral scan for precise bite and orthodontic/cosmetic planning. [ul data=1][li indent=1 align=left] This is the key difference from “quick fixes” without medical diagnosis.[li indent=0 align=left]Personalized plan – predictable[li indent=0 align=left] With Smile Design 2D/3D , I simulate the smile according to facial proportions, smile lines, skin color – eye color , combined with bite rehabilitation . If orthodontics is needed, the software determines the direction – magnitude of tooth movement , attachment position , or IPR (controlled interproximal remineralization). The result: natural beauty, long-term stability , not “fake”.[li indent=0 align=left]Modern equipment – biosafety[ul data=1][li indent=1 align=left]Modern ultrasonic scaler helps clean deeply but gently.[li indent=1 align=left]Soft tissue laser when precise gum shaping is required with minimal bleeding.[li indent=1 align=left]Low dose X-ray sensors and high quality restoration materials meet international standards.[li indent=1 align=left]Strict aseptic : packaging tools - sterilized, surface disinfected according to process.[li indent=0 align=left]Follow-up & Maintenance[li indent=0 align=left] Prevention is not a “one-time thing”. A 3–6 month follow-up schedule allows for:[ul data=1][li indent=1 align=left]Removes newly formed tartar, controls plaque .[li indent=1 align=left]Early detection of gum recession, interdental caries, and bite disorders.[li indent=1 align=left]Adjust your retainer/mouthpiece if you are maintaining your orthodontic treatment.Basic dental aesthetics knowledge
[li indent=0 align=left]Natural tooth color should be in harmony with the skin and eyes; too “blue-white” color can easily reveal the fake and increase sensitivity after bleaching.[li indent=0 align=left]The ratio of front teeth : central incisors - lateral incisors - canines needs to be balanced in width/height; porcelain veneers that are too thick will make the smile look heavier.[li indent=0 align=left]Smile line : The biting edge of the incisors follows the curve of the lower lip for a youthful smile.[li indent=0 align=left]Function before aesthetics : A beautiful smile must be comfortable to chew , not tiring the joints or wearing down the teeth.Benefits of dental aesthetics when done correctly
[li indent=0 align=left]Health : Even teeth and balanced bite help reduce wear and decay; healthy gums reduce bleeding and bad breath.[li indent=0 align=left]Psychological - social : Confident communication, support for work and relationships.[li indent=0 align=left]Long-term finance : Doing it right the first time saves on repair costs , especially compared to the consequences of poor quality treatment.5 Preventative Habits I Recommend for Busy People
[li indent=0 align=left]Brush twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush, modified Bass technique; floss every night.[li indent=0 align=left]Re-examination – professional cleaning every 6 months (3–4 months if there is a history of periodontal disease).[li indent=0 align=left]Fluoride paste 1,000–1,450 ppm ; fluoride/CPP-ACP mouthwash if sensitive or at high risk of decay.[li indent=0 align=left]Reduce sweets – carbonated drinks – smoking , avoid “sipping” all day; drink water after meals.[li indent=0 align=left]Protect tooth enamel : brush gently, avoid brushing immediately after drinking sour foods; if you grind your teeth, consider a mouth guard .When should I see a doctor immediately?
[li indent=0 align=left]Bleeding gums >7 days, persistent bad breath.[li indent=0 align=left]Sensitivity to cold/hot drinks and food.[li indent=0 align=left]Loose teeth, rapidly receding gums; temporomandibular joint pain, mouth opening with a "click" sound.[li indent=0 align=left]Considering cosmetic procedures (bleaching, veneers, orthodontics) but have not had a periodontal exam or x-rays .Conclusion
I always believe that prevention is the foundation of all cosmetic treatments. A beautiful smile must be healthy - durable - harmonious . Go to a professional dental facility : with modern equipment , sterile procedures , and certified - experienced doctors to get the right diagnosis, the right treatment and the right maintenance . From there, you will save time, money and most importantly: maintain long-term oral health and confidence every time you smile.
