Burnout has been talked about a lot in the office world, but there's one group that gets less attention: frontline workers —medical workers, emergency workers, and relief volunteers.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, I have worked with many clients who are healthcare workers and volunteers who are not only facing a huge workload but also witnessing loss and trauma over and over again.
Numbers speak
The Straits Times 2022 report found that more than 49% of Singapore healthcare workers reported symptoms of burnout, and 14% showed signs of clinical depression.
In my therapy room, 7 out of 10 primary care clients come in with burnout combined with secondary trauma .
Illustrative case
Scenario 1:
An ICU nurse has seen patients die repeatedly during the pandemic, while working 16-hour shifts. Despite her exhaustion, she perseveres because she thinks “I can’t give up.” The consequences: chronic insomnia, flashbacks, and high anxiety.
Scenario 2:
A lifeguard is haunted by images of the scene after a major accident. He cannot concentrate on his work, and gradually separates himself from his family.

Those on the front lines caring for others need care, too. Burnout and secondary trauma are not signs of weakness, but signals that the body and mind need to heal .
