In my 20+ years as an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, one lesson stands out: early diagnosis and treatment can make all the difference. Unfortunately, many patients come to me only after years of living with discomfort or functional problems. The first reason early intervention matters is that many jaw and facial conditions worsen over time. A slight bite misalignment in youth, if left untreated, can lead to severe temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder, chronic pain, and even facial asymmetry. The second reason is that surgery can be less invasive when addressed early. I’ve treated teenagers with congenital jaw deformities where timely corrective surgery allowed them to avoid more complex procedures later in life. The healing process is often faster and more predictable in younger patients. The third reason is prevention of secondary health issues. Chronic jaw misalignment doesn’t just affect chewing—it can cause headaches, neck and shoulder tension, and even sleep disorders. Correcting the problem early helps protect overall health. One memorable case was a high school student who came to me after years of difficulty chewing. With proper diagnosis and treatment, she was able to eat comfortably, smile confidently, and live without the discomfort she had accepted as “normal” for so long. If there’s one message I could give to the public, it’s this: don’t wait until a condition becomes unbearable. Your future health—and comfort—depend on the steps you take today.
